Programme of Study

Title:
The experiment of combining motion graphics with live action in commercials

Project rationale:

As a new measure, motion graphics design had been widely used in the field of network brand, commercial and film titles. The superiority of motion graphics is intuitive and making a strong visual impact to audiences. It can convey information directly and effectively through using dynamic graphics, such like abstract geometry (kind of 2d or 3d). After watching plenty of motion graphic works, I found the combination of motion graphics design and live action is most appealing for me. In other words I want to focus my further research on taking unreal things into the real world.

Aims:

The aim of this project is to explore the way to integrate motion graphics with live action. I will focus on exploring ideas and the methods of production that combine motion graphics with live action through analyzing some successful cases in this field. I will shoot some sequences of scenery and interact animation with the live action sequences by using 3D and compositing packages. Consequently every real element in the scenery will cause some interesting effects to the animated element. I will also discuss how this technology express emotion and narrate story in productions, and what distinctive visual experience
it convey to audiences.

Objectives:
a. Explore how to integrate unreal stuff (2d or 3d) with live action.
b. Research the tools and techniques in motion track.
c. Explore how to use motion graphics coordinate the soundtrack perfectly.
d. Explore how motion design express emotion and narrate story in music video or commercial.

Research Strategy:
a.  Collect existed videos which used motion design with live action
and analyze what advantages they had and what technology
     they used
b.  Use questionnaire to collect some useful information and some
issue that I am not sure about. Modify my research strategy and
my story script base on the feedback. The target population of
questionnaire will be my classmates and teachers.
c.  Use email or some other communication tools contact with au-
thority in this field for consulting the issues on the technology.

Expected Outcomes:
The outcome will be an experimental music video or a public service ads which will be expressed by live-action with motion graphics.
